The Arc and UCP have jointly developed a Legislative Goals 2003 that will provide the framework for discussions with members of the 108th Congress and their respective staffs regarding disability issues. The Legislative Goals also were developed in cooperation with AAMR (the American Association on Mental Retardation), a network of professionals from numerous disciplines who strive to provide research, resources, supports and services to persons with mental retardation and related disabilities.
The foundations for our 2003 legislative agenda are quite simply The Arcís, UCPís, and AAMRís mission statements, principles, core values, position statements, current policies, and input developed by volunteers, members and professionals from across the country. There are eight priority goals that are critical to meeting the unmet needs of people with disabilities and their families.
These program areas weave together to form a support network for the constituents that we care about. Each goal will be worked with equal fervor as specific legislative proposals begin to be introduced and move through the legislative process on the Hill. Our staff will keep a keen eye on these goals, as well as the other additional critical goals listed alphabetically in this goals booklet.
