"Free Our People" March and Rally, September 4-17

ADAPT’s “Free Our People”
March and Rally
September 4-17, 2003

Join ADAPT, UCP, The Arc, and other disability groups for the "Free Our People" March! Hundreds of people with disabilities from across the nation—many using wheelchairs and other mobility aids—will begin the 144-mile March on September 4 in Philadelphia and these participants will be joined by more people along the route to Washington, DC. The "Free Our People" March is co-sponsored by UCP and The Arc.

The March culminates on Wednesday, September 17 at 1:00 p.m. on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, with a rally to demand passage of the Medicaid Community-based Attendant Services and Supports Act (MiCASSA, S. 971 and H.R. 2032) so there will be "No More Stolen Lives." We encourage all to join legions of activists and their supporters from the disability and aging communities to urge lawmakers to enact legislation that would provide all Americans with long-term care services in their home. MiCASSA would provide all people with disabilities with an opportunity to choose to receive necessary health care services in their homes instead of being forced into nursing home or institutional settings.

In addition to asking for the passage of MiCASSA, rally participants also will be urging Congress to:

  • pass Money Follow the Person legislation;
  • pass real Medicaid Reform, not block grants; and
  • implement the integration requirement in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

For more information on how to be a part of this monumental rally, contact Bob Kafka at 512-431-4085, or visit www.freeourpeople.org.
